It is the mission of the Ohio Medical Academy. Ohio Medical Academy is focused on providing exceptional education in the areas of Medical Assisting, Phlebotomy, and Medication Aide. For those looking to start a career in health care we provide all the necessary tools, and skills to become professionally trained , compassionate health care professionals. Admission Policy
Admission requirements All students that wish to enroll in courses at Ohio Medical Academy must meet the following requirements.
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Hold a High School Diploma, GED or the equivalent (if taking NHA exam)
- Current Government issued ID
- STNA license or 1 year of residential care experience (for Medication Aide only)
Dress Code
- Scrubs are required for all OMED programs
- Red scrubs are required for the phlebotomy program
- black scrubs are required for Medication Aide / Medical Assistant
- Non-skid closed toe footwear
- Long hair pulled back
- Name badge
- No street clothing
- Clean neatly dressed, use of deodorant as well as other hygiene and grooming standards
- Trimmed neatly filed nails
Student Code of Conduct
violators of the code of conduct are subject be dropped from the program immediately
- Maintain professional and ethical behavior while in the premises of Ohio Medical
- Ohio Medical Academy is a drug free institution. Students shall refrain from drug and alcohol use including possessing, using, selling drugs/alcohol of any kind including controlled substances while on OMED premises.
- Students should abstain from use of profanity while on OMED premises
- No firearms, knives or weapons of any kind are permitted on OMED property
- Refrain from cheating of any kind including unauthorized material and plagiarizing
- No damage/destruction of OMED property
- Attend class on time, clean and neatly dressed in approved uniform per policy
- NO Intentional disruption while in the classroom, lab, or clinical facility.
- NO Filing excessive and unfounded grievances.
- NO Use of cellular phone while in class, lab, or at clinical facilities including texting and internet usage.
- Sleeping during class, lab, or at clinical facilities
- Failing to abide by OMED policies
- Leaving clinical class or clinical facility before the end of the scheduled time without faculty permission
- Abuse of any kind

Abuse or harassment of any kind will result in automatic drop from the program. All fees and monies will forfeited at this time. Any money owed will still be the responsibility of the said student as agreed per student policy.

Personal Safety
Do not leave your personal belongings in an unsecured place. During clinicals or while at the Academy, keep all valuables safely secured in the trunk of your car or out of sight in the car. In the event of any accident, theft, or injury a student is required to complete an incident report. Ohio Medical Academy is not responsible for theft or damage to vehicles or their contents.
Student Injury or Illness
Any expenses incurred by injury, accident, or illness that occurs at either the Academy or clinical area, is the sole responsibility of the student; OMED Academy is not responsible for any medical expenses. If a student becomes ill while at OMED Academy. Instructors may request that student leaves premises and advise to seek medical attention if necessary. Documentation from medical provider may be necessary to complete course/program.
Observed Holidays/Weather
New Year’s Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. School will close only for weather emergencies such as Level 3 snow emergencies. School may delay start time, if necessary for all other inclement weather conditions.

Phlebotomy Attendance Policy
Phlebotomy Technician shall attend all scheduled classes required by their program. Due short duration of the program courses absences will not be tolerated. Students are strongly encouraged to complete all class courses, and hours. Students shall not arrive more than 15 minutes after the scheduled course time. Students who arrive after the 15 minute grace period are subject to being dismissed for the day, and complete a mandatory make up class. Students may not miss more than 2 course days. Students who miss more than 2 class days will be subject to being dropped from the program. Any absent course days/hours must be made up and completed prior to course completion. Student will be subject to make up course day or hours at instructors discretion. Any student dropped from the program shall pay all related program fees, and costs as stated per enrollment agreement.
Tardy/Absent
Any student arriving more than 15 mins after the start of a class will be considered absent for the day. 2 absences will result in dismissal from the program. Any absent course days/hours must be made up and completed prior to course completion. Student will be subject to make up course day or hours at instructors discretion. Any student dropped from the program shall pay all related program for violating the absent policy will be subject to paying all fees, and costs as stated per enrollment agreement.
Graduation Requirements
Students must maintain a 75% or better combined average of test, quizzes, and homework assignments. Students must successfully complete the following requirements to earn a program certification
Phlebotomy
Class work, homework, quizzes 60% of overall average
Venipuncture check off (1) 10% overall average
Venipuncture check off (2) 10% overall average
Final Exam 20% of overall average
Students must have a combined average of 75% or better to earn course completion/certification.
Students who do not meet the program requirement must complete a new course, and pay required fees minus the registration fee. Re-admission is at the discretion of the school director and is not guaranteed.

Make up day should be granted upon agreement of instructor at designated time. Make up day will be paid at a rate of $50.00 make up fee. Course make up work may include:
- Completing a new class day
- One on One make up day with instructor
- Completion of missing test, quizzes, homework or skills
- Assignments to equivocal missed course material
Completion of missed course hours make up work is at instructors/administration satisfaction of approval

TUITION AND FEES
See Appendix A for academy specific tuition rates and fees. Enrollment fees are due with the application prior to the start of class. Prior to admission into a program, students are required to review and sign an Enrollment Agreement. All tenets of this Agreement must be adhered to; otherwise, a student will not be permitted to continue with the program, unless agreed upon in writing by the Director. Additional costs such as student health screenings and immunizations, background checks, externship requirements and other financial obligations not specified in the School Catalog or Enrollment Agreement are the responsibility of the student. Payments can be mailed, phoned in, paid online, or delivered in person to Ohio Medical Academy. Payment Methods: - Cash - Money Order or Cashier’s Check - VISA, MasterCard, Discover & American Express - Workforce Investment Act (WIA) - Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation (BVR) & Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR) - Veteran’s Affairs Post-9/11 GI Bill - Military Spouse Career Advancement Account (MyCAA) - Bureau of Workers Compensation (BWC) Refund Policy For Ohio students, all enrollment fees, tuition and other fees paid may be refund
Refund Policy
All monies paid by student who is not accepted into the program shall be refunded in accordance to Ohio Administrative Code section 3332-1-10.1. Students must notify Ohio Medical Academy in writing within 5 business days of signing the enrollment agreement. Such provisions will not be granted once student starts course.
Refunds for tuition and refundable fees shall be made in accordance with following provisions as established by Ohio Administrative Code section 3332-1-10:
(1) A student who withdraws before the first class and after the 5-day cancellation period shall be obligated for the registration fee.
(2) A student who starts class and withdraws before the academic term is 15% completed will be obligated for 25% of the tuition and refundable fees plus the registration fee.
(3) A student who starts class and withdraws after the academic term is 15% but before the academic term is 25% completed will be obligated for 50% of the tuition and refundable fees plus the registration fee.
(4) A student who starts class and withdraws after the academic term is 25% complete but before the academic term is 40% completed will be obligated for 75% of the tuition and refundable fees plus the registration fee.
(5) A student who starts class and withdraws after the academic term is 40% completed will not be entitled to a refund of the tuition and fees. The school shall make the appropriate refund within thirty days of the date the school is able to determine that a student has withdrawn or has been terminated from a program. Refunds shall be based upon the last date of a student’s attendance or participation in an academic school activity. Complaint or Grievance Procedure All student complaints should be first directed to the school personnel involved. If no resolution is forthcoming, a written complaint shall be submitted to the director of the school. Whether or not the problem or complaint has been resolved to his/her satisfaction by the school, the student may direct any problem or complaint to the Executive Director, State Board of Career Colleges and Schools, 30 East Broad Street, Suite 2481, Columbus, Ohio, 43215, Phone

Penalty for Late Tuition Payment
All fees must be paid in full by the first day of class for each specific Program. If a tuition payment is late, the student’s account will incur a $50.00 fee which will be added to the total cost of the determined program. If the full payment is not received prior to 40% course completion will result in immediate dismissal from the program, and are not permitted to attend classes, clinical, skill classes of any kind. Failure to complete full tuition payment within 30 days will result from being dropped from the program, and left over fees be added to collection for payment.
Complaint or Grievance Procedure
All student shall follow the chain of command as it relates to all complaints . A student may submit if complain is unresolved in writing to o the Executive Director, State Board of Career Colleges and Schools, 30 East Broad Street, Suite 2481, Columbus, Ohio, 43215, Phone 614-466- 2752; toll free 877-275-4219.
Disciplinary Actions
OMED administration and instructors reserves the right to issue disciplinary actions to any student whose behavior violates the student code of conduct. Students with infractions are subject to the following disciplinary actions of which the student will receive written notification. Depending upon the severity of the violation, school administration may include but not limited to automatic program dismissal:
- Issue a verbal warning to the student
- Issue a written warning to the student. The warning will be placed in the student record and be referenced should any further violations occur.
- Place the student on Academic Probation after agreeing upon the terms and conditions in a student/instructor/Director contract.
- Immediately dismiss the student from the school. Students who are dismissed due to a violation of the Code of Conduct are prohibited from being on OMED property.
Exposure Incident
Upon injury due to a needlestick, exposure to blood or bodily fluids student shall report the incident immediately to program instructor. Guidelines will be followed according to the CDC per students expense. All parties involved must submit to blood testing. It is strongly encouraged that students obtain health insurance prior to the start of class.
Lost & Stolen Items
Ohio medical Academy is not responsible for any lost or stolen items while on the premises of OMED property.
Career Assistance
OMED is strongly dedicated in the assistance of job placement. We offer Student referral letters, interview preparedness, Resume building, Job application assistance. We do provide advice on job placement, However we do not guarantee employment.
Class, Clinical & Externship Hours Class,
clinical and externship hours (if applicable) vary per program and type of program in which the student is enrolled. Students will be provided with a course syllabus that identifies the requirement of any clinical /externship hours. Each student is given a Daily Student Schedule and/or a Program Syllabus. Students will be notified of any changes of program start or end date due to student enrollment or unforeseen circumstances.
Enrollment Dates
Students may enroll in any program prior to the start of the first class if the class is not already full and can even begin on the second day of class, should late enrollment be approved.
Transfer Credit: OMED does not accept transfer credits. STNA license from outside sources will be accepted for the MED AIDE program only so as long as in accordance with the Ohio Board of Nursing requirements.
Program Description/Objectives
Phlebotomy Technician
The phlebotomy program is designed for beginners to learn and master venipuncture skills. Phlebotomist will be trained to perform Program content areas include (1) infection control, universal precautions, and safety; (2) anatomy and physiology of circulatory & other major body systems and medical terms; (3) identification, accuracy, ramifications to patients; (4) preparation and site selection; (5) equipment and additives; (6) disposal; (7) infectious disease and biohazards; (8) the coagulation process; (9) sources of error; (10) risk factors and complications; (11) corrective actions; (12) application of professional topics (communication, stress management, ethics, legal); and (13) quality assurance. Upon successful completion of this Program, students will receive a certificate of completion and will be eligible for National Certification through the National Healthcare Association (NHA. Phlebotomist will be training to work alongside skilled licensed professionals such as Doctors and Nurses in a variety of care settings. Through a mix of comprehensive skills , and lecture students will be able to demonstrate safe, knowledgeable skills that are necessary while preparing for a career in healthcare.
Program objectives Students will be prepared and educated on the following
- The role of the phlebotomy technician, including scope of practice, interpersonal skills, and ethics
- Foundational care skills such as ensuring accurate patient/specimen identification and following infection prevention practices
- Anatomy and physiology, including common tests related to each body system
- Fundamentals of the circulatory system, blood composition, and hemostasis
- Evacuated tube systems, syringe transfer devices, and capillary collection systems, including guides to tube additives, and order of draw
- Adaptations to blood collection procedures that may be required for specific patient populations or due to various patient conditions
- Steps required to protect specimen quality and integrity
- Communication with other healthcare team members and with a variety of patient populations (e.g., pediatric, geriatric, non-native speakers of English)
Medication Aide
Medication Aide careers are on the rise as the demand for medication aids increases in facilities like Long Term Care and Assistant Livings. Ohio Medical Academy helps prepare Medication aides who have previously completed an STNA program and license or 1 year of residential care experience. Medication Aides will work directly alongside Doctors and Nurses to administer Medication to patients.
Program Objectives: Students will be prepared and educated on the following
- The role of the medication aide, including scope of practice, communication skills, and ethics
- Foundational care skills such as setting up and passing medications and following infection prevention practices
- Common conditions by body system and commonly ordered medications, organized by medication class (integrated in the text and summarized in tables for each body system)
- Documentation in residents’ medication administration records (MAR), including electronic records (eMAR)
- Structure and function of each body system
- Basic pharmacology described in simple language
- Medication forms and common administration routes
- Recognizing and responding to adverse reactions such as anaphylaxis
- Prioritizing medication safety and preventing medication errors; this includes ISMP resources on commonly confused medication names and abbreviations that should not be used in medication documentation
Medical Assistant
Medical Assistants are necessary to assist Doctors and Nurses in a variety of care settings provide care and treatment to patients. Ohio Medical academy prepares students to deliver sound medical care in hospitals, doctor’s offices, clinics, urgent care centers, as well as specialty medicine and general practices. Medical Assistants will be provided with all the necessary skills and tools to provide safe, effective, professional and competent patient care.
Program Objectives: Students will be prepared and educated on the following
- The role of the medical assistant, including scope of practice, communication skills, and professionalism
- Foundational material such as legal and ethical concerns, patient diversity, human psychology and development, infection prevention and control (also emphasized throughout), and response to emergencies and disasters
- Fundamentals of administrative medical assisting, including scheduling, electronic and paper record management, correspondence, insurance, coding, billing, and office management
- Essential clinical skills such as vital sign and anthropometric measurements, history-taking, patient positioning, and preparing for and assisting with outpatient medical exams and procedures
- Basics of medical terminology and abbreviations, with more provided in the instructor’s materials
- Material organized by body system—this includes each system’s structure and function, lifespan changes, common conditions, examinations and procedures, and patient education related to the system
- Phlebotomy, EKG, and medication administration procedures described in simple language, with enough background information provided to help students understand the procedures, but not so much as to overwhelm

Leave of Absence (LOA)
Leave of absence shall be granted upon request of student in writing via email on a case by case scenario. LOA shall be approved per program Administrators or Program Presidents approval.

Clock hours: 150: Must meet admission policy requirements. Class will meet Monday-Friday for a total of 5hr per day for a total of 5 weeks. The first 7 days will be used to earn phlebotomy certification.
